Can-t Live Without Sports!!

Can-t Live Without Sports!!

My favourite sports

Everyone uses sports according to their needs. Some treat it as entertainment, some as passion, some find it as a way to keep fit and some are involved in sport for adrenaline. Whatever reason there may be, everybody loves at least one sport. A sport tends to bring out the best in you. Such is the beauty of sports.

I keep myself occupied by travelling through England and exploring the various styles of playing a game at different locations. I like playing football (soccer), rugby, tennis, cricket and golf. I am a sports enthusiast and play all other sports as well.

In England, everyone either plays a sport or at least follows one rigorously. The fan base for football in England is unparalleled especially in the Premier League, which is widely known as the best football league in the world. Cricket is our national sport but its viewership falls behind football, tennis and rugby. Visiting different cities and counties keeps me refreshed and playing with the locals and interacting with the locals is something I enjoy.

Hockey: Hockey is a sport which has lost its fans and glory in England. Although England take part in all the world events related to hockey, even the Olympics but still the popularity of this sport has dulled over the years. Still, I consider it to be an exhilarating sport and one which requires stamina and agility. I play hockey whenever I get the chance as it is a great way to stay in good shape.

Lacrosse: The English Lacrosse Association governs Lacrosse all over England. The England Men’s Team are the current world champions. England is quite successful at Lacrosse on European and world level.

Golf: Golf is loved in England. Although it was originated in Scotland, England has done a lot to develop Golf. The Ryder Cup, Open Championship and the BMW PGA Championship are the major tournaments in England. People here love golf and the attendance is huge at these big tournaments.

Boxing: Boxing is another widely popular sport in England and some of the best boxers in the world are from England. At the turn of the 21st century, boxing saw a decline in England; mainly because of football being preferred more by youngsters. Less number of boxing players started to become national icons than footballers. This is a disturbing stat for the sport.

Basketball: Basketball is not a very popular or huge sport in England. England has 2 basketball leagues, British Basketball League and English Basketball League. These leagues are not as big as the NBA but have modest resources and a decent fan base.

Australian Rules Football: Australian Rules Football gradually gained popularity in England and England competes in the Australian Football International Cup. The Great Britain National Australian Rules Football Team is England’s national team for this competition. This sport got more popular after 1989 and youngsters are increasingly taking interest in this sport. This is almost like the American Football with a few changed rules and regulations.

                                                           My favourite sports part 2

Many of us are driven by all kinds of sports; be it football, or as it is called ‘soccer’ in America (I’ll never understand that), cricket, rugby, tennis or any other sport. If you’re one of those sports fanatics, you’ll relate with me better. One of the biggest advantages of being an Englishman is that we have all the sports in the world here. Different parts of England have different popularity among sports. Football is played almost everywhere, small or big, cricket is usually played in lush greens of relatively bigger towns and cities, tennis is restricted to academies and clubs and rugby is played in a few pockets of England.

My exploits while traveling through England and playing with the locals, understanding the different ideology for a sport at different locations is a great way of relieving my stress.

I love travelling all over England and play the local sports there; visiting the sports clubs and hanging out with the locals. I’ve combined my 2 passions together, sports and travel. As we all know most of the biggest sports in the world began in England, cricket, football, lawn tennis, rugby and golf. Cricket is our national sport and not football, as many believe.

Cricket: England has a lot of cricket clubs. Cricket, often referred to as ‘Gentleman’s Game’, is mostly played during the months of April to August in England. It is a sport of true patience and strategies. I’ve visited Lord’s cricket ground, which is called “the home of cricket”. The Marylebone Cricket Club (MCC) is responsible for all the laws of cricket. I love watching county cricket as the best talents in England play there.

Tennis: It is the largest individual sport in England. We host Wimbledon every year and it is the biggest Grand Slam of the year. Each year I go to London during Wimbledon, to witness amazing players from around the world. Also, I love playing tennis with the locals there. There are some amazing facilities at local tennis clubs in London.

Rugby: Rugby is 2nd only to football in viewership across England. Rugby is very popular in Yorkshire, Cumbria and parts of North West England. I really enjoy playing rugby in Yorkshire and love this sport because of its competitiveness.

Football: England is home to many great football teams of the world. The most famous teams are Liverpool, Arsenal and Manchester United and they play in the Premier League, the highest tier of English football. I love visiting London, Merseyside and Manchester as locals there are highly knowledgeable about football and playing with them teaches me a lot about the nuances of the sport.

Badminton: Badminton is a handy sport and learning beginner level play is simple. The top level requires top levels of stamina, endurance, agility and flexibility though. I love playing badminton as it stretches my body and makes it more flexible.

Motorsports: Motorsports find a huge fan base in England. There are various go kart arenas where I love to go to try my hands on some motorsport. Almost all the Formula 1 teams are based in England.

                                             Playing Sports Is My Life

I love sports and anybody who shares this feeling would know that there is no better feeling than playing your favourite sport with like-minded people. The charge and energy it gives you is unmatched. In England, especially in London, there are sports club with so many sports. The price to join the club is not much and you get to play your favourite sport with other good players.

It is an amazing way to socialise too. It’s not that people who are good at sports should join such clubs; in fact it is even better for people who have been the last one to be picked for a team during their school days. These clubs usually have offbeat sports like, water polo, korfball, dodge ball, etc. The sports played here are competitive yet sociable. The main purpose of these clubs is recreation with a bit of competition because there’s no fun in sports if there’s no little competition.

One can choose on or all the sports on the list. Whichever sport you choose, you’re enrolled on a few weeks league competition. There’s no training for the sport and I think that’s the best part because there’s nothing like learning with experience. You can be assigned to a team or you can bring over your friends and form a team of your own.

More than a social club, these clubs turn out to become social clubs. With so many like minded people, one is certain to make new friends. Also, it is a great way to stay fit. Whoever wants to shed some pounds should join these clubs for at least one sport. The sports played here are not mainstream so beginners and amateurs will feel comfortable playing here. All these sports focus on certain muscles in your body so it is advised that you choose all the sports in order to keep all your muscles strong. It is better than hitting the gym, any day.

Dodge ball is one sport which the beginners can try at first. It is a fast and entertaining sport and who doesn’t enjoy hitting people with big rubber balls. Another great sport for beginners would be Inner tube water polo. This is not a typical water polo sport. Players sit in a rubber ring and paddle up and down the pool while passing the ball and trying to score goals. One may even tip other player which is an added fun factor in this sport.

For a person who has just moved to London and wants to make some friends and kickoff a social life, joining a sports club is the ideal thing to do. Each such club has a small bar along with it so you can sit with your new friends and talk to each other over a pint of beer.

The cost is usually £50 to £75 for an individual and £400 to £600 for a group of 12 people for a 14 week league. Every expense is included in this fee; from kits to venue and from refreshments to equipment.
